The full value of sharing knowledge and experience with your children
Dinner was ready, but where was Ben (7)? After a considerable wait, a very happy and excited boy arrived in the kitchen. We discovered that he had been at a neighbour’s house when he had been playing and reading.
Before the main meal, at night, we had created and developed the habit of a discussion taking place where each person, around the table, needed to explain the great things that had occurred during the day. None of this ‘boring’ or ‘nothing’ stuff….we use this as a time to encourage our children to understand and appreciate the wonderful things that went on in their lives, every day. Yes, Mum and Dad had to participate, as well.
Taking the opportunity to seize this moment of discovery, we visited the neighbour’s place and borrowed a copy of ‘Where did I come from?’. You have probably read the book to your children, as well. After a brief discussion, we realise what a wonderful opportunity had been given to us. After dinner, I took the opportunity to read the book to Ben and Justine (5).
For many nights, we read the book again and again and again. It was a wonderful opportunity to start the process of educating the children in the area of sex, the body etc.
On one occasion I was lying on the bed with Ben on one side and Justine on the other. Page after page, we read and discussed the particular information on each page. Then, there was the page which showed Mum and Dad standing naked. Seeing parents without any clothes on was not a surprise to our children.
I thought the explanation, which I gave, was quite good. I then asked Ben if he could see any noticeable difference between the Mum and Dad in the picture. He thought for a while and then came out with this classic statement…..he is bald! You know, nothing beats the humour that really happens. The innocence of children!
With a doubt, I found it a little difficult to keep reading as I was holding back the laughter…. I did not want Ben to feel that I was laughing at him, but I did not know how to explain myself.
The teachable moment can arise at any time. Yes, it is often quite unexpected but presents us with an opportunity to educate and help others who are significant in our lives.
A teachable moment is an unplanned opportunity that arises where we have an ideal chance to offer insight to our family, friends, clients….anyone, in fact. It is not something that you can plan for; rather, it is a fleeting opportunity that must be sensed and seized.
